The Face Project

About Face

The FACE Project (Functional Approach to Character Education) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2000 by psychologists, teachers, education researchers, and local citizens. Our curricula have been used in hundreds of schools. 

We provide:

A research-based and comprehensive teacher curriculum, integrated within the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). 38 weekly lesson plans per grade, preschool through 5th grade that focus on learning tolerance, empathy, respect, and celebrating differences.  Integrated within the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.

Teacher and counselor-friendly curriculum that is developed by educators for educators. School professionals are offered in-service training with follow-up consultations to enable teachers and counselors to institute a program that is designed around a comprehensive Character Education curriculum, featuring weekly, individualized lesson plans for preschool through fifth grades.

What Our Teachers Have To Say

  • The concepts and vocabulary fit well into a variety of subject matter. Looking at how loyalty was applied to these historic heroes was a good history connection for two different time periods. This lesson was ideal for combining reading skills with history.
  • The lessons taught the students how to consider all factors when making decisions and helped them to consider both sides of a story or issue.
  • One of my favorite lessons helped the students gained new insight on how charities function and how they support the community.
5th grade
  • My students really benefited from learning about self-awareness.  I like how they approach the lesson. It has students look at habits, traditions and customs from another point of view, keeping it positive from the start
  • The lessons are great.  Students respond well to questions asked and their written and shared ideas were great. As a classroom teacher, I also enjoyed participating with my students in paragraph sharing.
4th grade
  • My students enjoyed the role play most of all because it gives the students a chance to brainstorm and share ideas.
  • Our favorite lesson was when we discussed the concept of friendship and how important it is to be a friend.
  • The students were engaged in the lesson and enjoyed being expressive with art and writing. The students really enjoyed the journal entries because they were able to express their ideas.
3rd grade
  • The consequences of behavior is a good closing lesson for students to reflect on the whole school year.
  • The lessons with stories were excellent, they provide ideas for specific steps to improving character.
  • Additionally, the stories show the students real life situations which the students can relate to.
2nd grade
  • I like the assessment and extension activities/discussion that are offered with the lessons.
  • The lesson plans lead to friendly competition between peers, which the kids love.
  • The lessons encourage student involvement during circle time, provide them with hands on activity, give them chance to put what was learned into practice, and provide lesson extension was good for at home practice.
  • The students loved the book “do unto others” and writing one thing they needed to be better at.  A discussion that led them to work harder on concepts that helps us be more respectful.
  • The students also love the story of The boy who cried wolf. It is an excellent way to teach young children the importance of honesty.
  • The “School rules” lesson is practical and necessary for daily appropriate behavior.
  • The “Friendship” lesson teaches students how to be and have good friends.
1st grade
  • Role playing with students led to different scenarios that kept students involved.  I loved how they worked out problems.
  • I liked the assortment and extension activities/discussion that are offered with the lessons.
  • I took the discussion about applying generosity to their lives and extended to social studies.  We discussed how the Indians were generous to the Pilgrims and how we can show generosity during the holidays. This lead to the development of great character traits for students to understand and practice.
  • My students learned to work problems out by talking them out.
  • The lesson plans offered great opportunities for teamwork.
  • The lessons are age appropriate and interesting.  For example, through a discussion about citizenship we’ve been discussing the “pull for the team” concept.
  • The lesson plans are well thought out and perhaps too engaging. I had difficulty moving the students past role play.
  • The materials are user-friendly and grade appropriate.
